
Zhengtao Pan
Bio
Zhengtao Pan is a Shanghai-born composer, arranger, and orchestrator, increasingly recognized as one of the most in-demand composer/arrangers of his generation, with work spanning jazz, concert music, and media scoring. A graduate of Berklee College of Music with a double major in Jazz Composition and Classical Music Composition, he is currently pursuing a dual master’s degree in Jazz Writing and Film Scoring at the Eastman School of Music. In the media world, Pan has contributed music to more than 20 game projects, including 4 PC and PS5 titles. His credits include Mist Sequence, Lost Soul Aside, One Piece: The Bloodline, and Arknights, and he has provided music outsourcing and production support for companies such as ByteDance, Masaya Games, and miHoYo.
Beyond screen-based work, Pan is active as a composer for large ensembles and concert stages. His music has received major recognition, including being selected as Best Large Instrumental Composition by the Jazz Education Network and earning five DownBeat Student Music Awards across categories including small ensemble composition. He has also won multiple ASMAC honors, including the Pat Williams Composing & Arranging Competition and the Bill Conti Big Band Arranging Competition, and received top awards at the Bridges Composition Competition (Ravinia Jazz Festival). His concert works have been premiered by ensembles such as HyperCube Ensemble and Cascadia Composers in venues including Webster University, Christ the King Lutheran Church, and the Creative Tools Music Festival.
Pan’s big band works have been performed by leading artists and ensembles including Grammy-winning artist Steven Feifke’s Big Band, saxophonist Alexa Tarantino, and the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dave Rivello.
His collaborations extend internationally, including projects with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra, Budapest Jazz Orchestra, U.S. Jazz Ambassadors, European Recording Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Belarus Sonic Orchestra, and the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava.
As a bandleader, Pan directs the Zhengtao Pan Jazz Orchestra, which has released three albums (with two currently in production). His recording projects feature distinguished guest artists, including Benny Benack III, Walter Smith III, and Itai Kriss (Scenery in My Story); Rufus Reid, Sara Gazarek, and Steve Wilson (Day by Day); and Sean Jones, Steven Feifke, Keita Ogawa, Nicole Zuraitis, Miguel Zenón, Sara Caswell, Jiazhuo Liu, and Vitor Gonçalves (Jade Dragonfly). He also collaborates as a chamber musician and composer, including work with Nick Finzer and Tomoko Omura (Mirror, Floating on the Water).
Guided by mentors including Steven Feifke, Miho Hazama, and Gabriela Ortiz, Zhengtao Pan continues to shape a distinctive voice across contemporary jazz, concert music, and media scoring.
